Palestinian Youth action Center For Community Development – LAYLAC –
Yesterday, like every week, a group of Laylac’s volunteers went to Wadi Helets (between Beit Jala and Battir) to climb and breathe fresh air.
This project started 6 month ago by volunteers of Laylac, lead through our two wonderful year-long French volunteers with our partner organization, CEMEA. This project coordinates trips around Bethlehem area to discover new places while practicing an unusual sport in Palestine, climbing. Furthermore, this workshop is a way to have sports in a gender mixed environment creating a safe, judgement free space for all members of Laylac and international volunteers. When climbing, you have to trust the person with the security line, and climbing is a difficult yet thrilling sport, so in creating this safe and judgemental free space, you end up doing more than just climbing in the process. Lastly, these places the project takes the youth are in danger of being confiscated and occupied by Israeli settlements. So we are reclaiming these spaces through sport, and creating lifelong memories of these areas that Palestinians soon will not have access to.
