“In between” project
The project “In between” was led by the Art department of Laylac center and the French painter Sania, in the refugee camp of Dheisheh (Bethlehem), within the framework of the twinning between the international center of popular culture (CICP, Paris) and Laylac. The exhibition took place on the 16th of october 2016 at Ibdaa center (Dheisheh). We would like to thank everybody for coming to support the event. The exhibition was opened by the minister of prisoners and political prisoners were also there.
The issue of palestinians political prisoners is not easy to approach because several aspects and realities are mixed, first of all about the legality of the detention itself, but also conditions of the deprivation of freedom – the second de facto loss of freedom for the Palestinians and one tool of the occupation -, but also its impacts.
And if the Palestinians can be arrested at any time, in a totally arbitrary way or for a precise reason, this “in between” state is the everyday life of the Palestinian men, women and children, between detention and “freedom”, between two arrests…
In every stage, like “the wait”, the arrest, the detention itself – law of exception of the Apartheid -, the judgment or the release for some and after detention, to be a political prisoner provokes various feelings and emotions, often contradictory, just not for prisoners but also for families and relatives. Thus, anxiety, stress, feelings of injustice and punishment, solitude, despair, strength, resistance, pride and solidarity bring face to face. The detention of the political prisoners with the realities which we know is violent, but violent also for the impact inside yourself. This permanent state of “in between”, almost schizophrenic, is a reality that the “In between” project wants to illustrate through paintings around the arrest, the everyday life in detention and the release.
